Apple Watch Won't Turn On? Fixes to Try Before Repair

Apple Watch won't turn on, shows a black screen or sticks on the Apple logo? Follow these charging and restart steps, then learn when it needs a repair.
Apple Watch Won't Turn On? Fixes to Try Before Repair

Most Apple Watches that look dead are not broken. They are out of battery, sitting on a charger that is not making contact, or frozen in software. Work through the steps below in order: charge the watch properly, force restart it, and deal with the Apple logo or a black screen if either appears. If nothing works, the cause is probably hardware, and a technician can diagnose it, often in a single visit.

TL;DR

  • A watch that will not wake may need up to 30 minutes on a working charger before anything appears on screen, according to Apple Support.
  • Check the cable, adapter, outlet and magnet alignment before you assume the watch is broken.
  • Force restart only if a normal restart is not possible: hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds.
  • If it is stuck on the Apple logo, force restart, then unpair and re-pair with your iPhone, then update watchOS.
  • If a blank display still responds with sounds or vibration, or there is no sign of charging at all, it is time for a hardware diagnosis.

Start with the battery, not the screen

A black Apple Watch and a dead Apple Watch look identical. The first job is to rule out a drained battery, because it is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix.

Apple’s guidance is that if the screen stays blank when you press the side button, or a charging-cable icon appears, the watch may need up to 30 minutes of charging before it turns on. A red lightning bolt means the watch does not have enough power to start. Connected to its cable, it changes to a red lightning bolt inside a ring.

So do not give up after five minutes. Put the watch down, confirm the charging symbol, and leave it alone.

How to charge it properly

Watch charging problems are usually connection problems. Run through this list:

  1. Use the right cable. Apple recommends the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or the USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable, fully connected to the power adapter and plugged into an outlet. If you need a replacement, a magnetic fast charging cable for Apple Watch is the type to look for.
  2. Use a wall outlet. A laptop USB port may not deliver enough power. iFixit’s troubleshooting guide also suggests testing different cables, chargers and outlets to isolate the faulty part.
  3. Clean the contact points. Wipe the back of the watch and the charging puck with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Skin oil, sweat residue and lotion can keep the magnet from seating properly. Remove any case or film that sits between the watch and the charger.
  4. Align the magnets. When the back of the watch sits correctly on the charger, a charging symbol appears on the face and a chime plays unless Silent Mode is on.
  5. Wait. For a fully depleted watch, iFixit says to leave it charging for at least one hour before drawing conclusions.

If the watch never shows a charging symbol with a known-good cable and outlet, read our companion guide, Apple Watch Not Charging? Six Checks Before a Technician Takes Over.

What the charging symbols mean

What you see What it means
Red lightning bolt Battery too low to turn on
Red bolt inside a ring (on the cable) Charging, but not enough power yet
Green lightning bolt Charging normally
Yellow charging symbol Low Power Mode is on; it turns off at 80 percent
Nothing at all Possible charger, cable or watch hardware fault

How long a full charge takes

If the watch eventually wakes, do not judge it by the first ten minutes. Per Apple’s fast-charge page, Series 10 and later reach 80% from empty in about 30 minutes. Series 7 to 9, Apple Watch SE 3 and Ultra 3 and later take about 45 minutes. Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 take about an hour. Real times vary with the charger, your settings, usage and temperature.

Try a normal restart, then a force restart

Once the watch shows signs of life, or if it is on but frozen, restart it. Apple separates the two methods. A force restart is for cases where a normal restart is not possible or has failed.

Normal restart: press and hold the side button, then use the power icon on screen.

Force restart: press and hold the side button and the Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Some guides online say to hold for 30 seconds. Ten is Apple’s figure; keep holding past it if the logo has not shown yet.

If the screen is black, try the force restart while the watch is on the charger. This does not erase anything. It only restarts the watch.

Check the watch is not simply asleep

A black screen does not always mean the watch is off. Before forcing anything, check these:

  • Theater Mode or Sleep Focus can keep the display dark until you tap it.
  • Wrist raise settings may have been changed, so the screen does not wake when you lift your arm.
  • Power Reserve keeps the watch on but shows very little.

Press the side button once. A working watch shows its battery percentage in Control Center, and the battery widget on a paired iPhone can show the watch’s charge as well. If your iPhone shows a charge level for the watch, the watch is on and the issue is the display or a setting.

A watch that shows the logo and never gets past it is a software problem more often than a hardware one. Apple’s steps are in order of effort:

  1. Force restart by holding the side button and Digital Crown until the screen goes black and the logo returns.
  2. Keep the watch on its charger during this, so a low battery does not interrupt the process.
  3. Unpair and re-pair the watch with your iPhone if the logo persists.
  4. Check for a watchOS update after re-pairing.

If the logo is still there afterward, Apple’s stuck-on-logo guidance is to get service. Unpairing creates a backup on your iPhone that you can restore from, so you generally keep your data. Heat while charging, or a watch that flashes the logo repeatedly and warms up, points to a battery or logic board problem rather than a software glitch.

Black screen, but the watch seems alive

Try this quick test: ping the watch from your iPhone’s Find My app, or use the Ping function in Control Center on iPhone. According to iFixit, if the watch makes sounds or vibrates when pinged but the display stays blank, the display is likely faulty. If there is no charging indication at all, a side button or logic board problem is possible.

That gives you a rough map of what to expect:

Symptom Likely cause
Red bolt, then it boots after charging Drained battery
No charging symbol with a known-good charger Charge contacts, battery or logic board
Stuck on the Apple logo after restart and re-pair Software corruption or battery fault
Vibrates or chimes on ping, screen black Display or display connector
Dead after swimming or a splash Moisture, corrosion or charging module
Dead after a drop Internal connector or display damage

Owners in forums report charging module failures after beach swims and showers. Water resistance is not permanent, and seals wear. If your watch went dead after water exposure, do not keep trying to charge it repeatedly. Dry the outside, and have it checked for corrosion.

What we see in the shop

We repair smartwatches every day, and a no-power Apple Watch tends to fall into a few buckets. A depleted battery that was never given enough time to charge. A worn charging cable or a dirty charging puck. A battery that has aged and can no longer hold power. Physical or moisture damage after a drop, a swim or a workout in the rain.

The first group costs you nothing to fix. The others need parts and a diagnosis, and that is what we do. At Mobile Care, our certified technicians test the device first, so you know what is wrong before anyone replaces anything. Our battery replacement service covers wearables, and our water damage repair includes corrosion cleaning.

When your Apple Watch needs repair

You have done enough at home when all of these are true:

  • You have tried at least two different cables or chargers and a wall outlet.
  • You left the watch on the charger for an hour or more.
  • You tried a force restart while it was charging.
  • You re-paired it, if it reaches the Apple logo.

At that point, the problem is physical. The usual culprits are a failing battery, a damaged display or display cable, a faulty charging coil, a stuck side button, or moisture damage. Software repairs cannot fix any of these. The longer you keep trying, the greater the risk of making a water or connector problem worse.

Does your watch qualify for Apple service?

Age matters. Apple says Apple Watch owners can get service and parts for at least five years after Apple last distributed the product for sale, and potentially up to seven years, depending on parts availability and applicable law. An older Series 1 to Series 3 is likely past that point, and independent repair becomes the realistic option.

What repairs cost in the US

Apple does not publish a single price for a dead watch. It inspects the watch and gives an out-of-warranty estimate, and fees may be subject to tax and shipping. Its limited warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year from purchase, but not accidental damage or batteries that wear down through normal use.

At Apple’s pricing, damage not covered by AppleCare+ can be expensive. MacRumors reported in September 2026 that other damage service costs $349 for a cellular aluminum Series 12, $549 for Apple Watch Ultra 4, and $599 for ceramic Series 12. With AppleCare+, damage fees were $69 for ceramic Series 12 and $79 for Ultra 4.

For many owners, especially those whose watch is out of coverage, that is a large share of the price of a new watch. That is why a diagnosis from an independent repair shop is worth getting before you decide. We do not publish fixed prices for watch repairs because the cost depends on the model and the fault, so we quote after testing. The quote is explained before work begins.

Keep it from happening again

  • Charge before it hits zero. Deep discharge is the most common reason a watch will not respond.
  • Replace frayed cables. A cable that works only when held at an angle is on its way out.
  • Rinse after swimming or sweaty workouts and dry the back of the watch before putting it on the charger.
  • Keep software updated. It reduces the odds of a logo loop after an update.
  • Watch for battery decline. If your watch drains in hours, the battery is ageing, and a replacement is cheaper than a dead-watch emergency.

Perspective: what we tell customers

We do not want to repair a watch that only needs a charge. So the first thing we do is the same as the steps above: confirm the charger works, give the battery time, and try a restart. It takes minutes, and it spares you a trip. When those fail, speed matters, because a watch tracks your workouts, your calls and your payments. That is why we focus on same-day diagnostics and honest quotes. If your watch is not worth repairing, we will say so.

FAQ

Why won’t my Apple Watch turn on even though it is charging?

A deeply drained watch can take up to 30 minutes before the charging symbol appears, and longer to boot. Make sure the magnets are aligned and the back of the watch is clean. If an hour passes with no response on a working cable and outlet, the battery or charging module may be faulty.

How do I force restart an Apple Watch?

Hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Use this only when a normal restart is not possible. It does not erase your data.

Force restart first. If the logo stays, unpair and re-pair the watch with your iPhone, then update watchOS. If it is still stuck, the watch needs service.

Can a black screen be fixed without replacing the watch?

Often yes. If the watch vibrates or chimes when you ping it, the display or its connector is the likely fault, and that can be repaired. Replacing the whole watch is rarely the first answer.

How much does it cost to repair an Apple Watch?

It depends on the model and the fault. Apple gives an estimate after inspecting the watch, and out-of-warranty damage fees can run from the low hundreds to several hundred dollars for newer models. An independent diagnosis shows you the actual fault before you decide.
